Nativity Vote
(2007-10-15)
(wgvu) - Christmas is weeks away but voters in
Berkley will decide November 6th whether to return a Christian
nativity scene to City Hall.
The Detroit Free Press reports the city council voted last year
to move the nativity to a church lawn under threat of a lawsuit
from the American Civil Liberties Union.
The U.S. Supreme Court has found a nativity can be
constitutional if it's mixed with secular decorations.
The Detroit News reports public opinion polls show most
Americans favor religious displays on public property.
Another Detroit suburb last year voted to exclude a menorah
after three years as part of the city's holiday display. Southfield
kept toy soldiers, a sleigh and snowman, grazing deer, a Christmas
tree and a dreidel (DRAY'-dul).
