AUTO TALKS
(2007-10-15)
(wgvu) -
UNITED AUTO WORKERS OFFICIALS FROM CHRYSLER
PLANTS NATIONWIDE WILL GATHER TODAY IN DETROIT.
UNION LEADERS WILL BRIEF THEM ON DETAILS OF THE TENTATIVE
CONTRACT REACHED LAST WEEK. THEN THEY'LL HELP EXPLAIN IT TO SOME
45,000 RANK-AND-FILE MEMBERS WHO WILL VOTE ON THE DEAL.
THE CHRYSLER AGREEMENT IS SIMILAR TO THE ONE ALREADY RATIFIED BY
UAW-REPRESENTED WORKERS AT GENERAL MOTORS. IT CONTAINS PROVISIONS
FOR COMPANY-FUNDED UNION-RUN TRUSTS THAT WILL PAY MUCH OF THE
AUTOMAKERS' RETIREE HEALTH CARE COSTS.
BOTH CONTRACTS ALSO INCLUDE LOWER WAGE SCALES FOR NEWLY HIRED
WORKERS WHO DON'T BUILD VEHICLES OR MAKE AUTO PARTS.
