(wgvu) - I GENERAL MOTORS IS SELLING MORE CARS THESE DAYS
IN ONE OF THE WORLD'S FASTEST-GROWING CAR MARKETS.
GM'S SALES IN INDIA FOR THE PAST SIX MONTHS ARE NEARLY TWO
AND-A-HALF TIMES AHEAD OF YEAR-AGO LEVELS. THIS DESPITE A SHARP
RISE IN INTEREST RATES THAT'S CURTAILED DEMAND FOR NEW CARS.
GM HAS BEEN SELLING CARS IN INDIA SINCE 1996. ITS MARKET SHARE
THERE HAS GROWN TO 3.6 PERCENT, TOPPING AMERICAN RIVAL FORD FOR THE
FIRST TIME.
THE NEW CHEVROLET SPARK HAS BEEN A BIG SELLER FOR GM. A BASE
VERSION COSTS JUST $7,000.
JAPANESE AND KOREAN AUTOMAKERS SELL MANY MORE CARS IN INDIA THAN
COMPANIES LIKE GM AND FORD, WHICH FOCUSED UNTIL RECENTLY ON SELLING
RELATIVELY COSTLY MIDSIZE SEDANS.
