(wgvu) - - THOUSANDS OF CHRYSLER WORKERS
NATIONWIDE ARE AWAITING WORD ON WHETHER THEY'LL BE AT WORK OR ON
STRIKE LATER THIS MORNING.
CONTRACT TALKS BETWEEN CHRYSLER AND THE UNITED AUTO WORKERS
UNION WERE UNDER WAY EARLY TODAY IN AUBURN HILLS.
THE UNION SAYS ITS 49,000 MEMBERS AT CHRYSLER WILL STRIKE AT 11
A.M. UNLESS THE TWO SIDES AGREE ON A NEW CONTRACT BY THEN.
THE UNION HAD SAID IT WOULD STOP EXTENDING ITS CONTRACT AT
MIDNIGHT, 11 HOURS AHEAD OF THE STRIKE DEADLINE.
THE TALKS ARE THE FIRST SINCE THE PRIVATE EQUITY COMPANY
CERBERUS CAPITAL MANAGEMENT BOUGHT CONTROL OF CHRYSLER FROM THE
GERMAN COMPANY NOW KNOWN AS DAIMLER.
