Great Lakes Region Needs Help
(2007-10-09)
(wgvu) -
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - A report issued today says national
parks and lakeshores in the Great Lakes area need help.
The National Parks Conservation Association says the parks have
environmental problems common to the entire region, including as
air and water pollution.
But they also face unique threats ... such as decay of
lighthouses and other historic buildings at Apostle Islands and
Isle Royale on Lake Superior.
Lakeshores such as Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan and
Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior are plagued by invasive species.
Encroaching development is a challenge for Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore and Keweenaw National Historical Park.
The report is the latest in a series that calls for better
funding and bigger staffs for national parks.
