Former Prosecutor Indicted
(2007-10-09)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - A defense lawyer has told prospective jurors that
the case against a former federal prosecutor charged with
wrongdoing is "misguided."
Attorney William Sullivan has said Richard Convertino and former
federal investigator Harry Smith III were protecting Americans from
terrorists in the 2003 convictions of several men in the first
major terrorism trial following the September 11th attacks.
But the Justice Department says documents that could have aided
the defense during that trial were not turned over by the
government as required.
Convertino and Smith have pleaded not guilty to obstruction of
justice, making false declarations before a court and conspiracy
charges.
Opening arguments are expected to begin tomorrow in U.S.
District Court in Detroit.
