AUTO TALKS
(2007-10-08)
(wgvu) - BARGAINERS FOR CHRYSLER AND THE UNITED AUTO
WORKERS HAVE MADE PROGRESS ON EFFORTS TO REACH AGREEMENT ON A NEW
FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT.
BUT A PERSON WHO'S BEEN BRIEFED ON THE TALKS SAYS THE UNION GAVE
THE COMPANY NOTICE LAST NIGHT THAT A STRIKE IS POSSIBLE.
THE PERSON TELLS THE "ASSOCIATED PRESS" THAT THE UAW GAVE
CHRYSLER A 72-HOUR NOTICE OF A POTENTIAL STRIKE. IT ISN'T CLEAR
TONIGHT WHETHER THE NOTICE WOULD END TOMORROW OR WEDNESDAY.
THE UAW WENT ON STRIKE FOR NEARLY TWO DAYS LAST MONTH BEFORE
COMING TO A TENTATIVE AGREEMENT WITH GENERAL MOTORS. UNION MEMBERS
ARE VOTING ON WHETHER TO RATIFY THE DEAL WITH GM.
LABOR EXPERT HARLEY SHAIKEN SAYS THE STRIKE NOTICE COULD BE A
UAW BARGAINING TACTIC.
