Shipwreck Found in Lake Ontario
(2007-10-03)
(wgvu) - ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Two divers from Rochester, New York have
found another shipwreck on the bottom of Lake Ontario.
Underwater explorers Jim Kennard and Dan Scoville have
discovered several wreck sites on the lake, including the
well-preserved remains of a schooner that sank in 1849.
Now, they say they've discovered the wreck of another schooner,
the Orcadian, which went down in 1858. The two men say the
shipwreck is located about 10 miles offshore.
The ship was carrying a cargo of wheat when it collided a ship
hauling salt to Chicago.
The wreck of the Orcadian was found using sophisticated sonar
developed by Kennard, a retired electrical engineer.
He estimates there are about 200 shipwrecks on the bottom of
Lake Ontario.
