AIR WING-SANG
(2007-10-03)
(wgvu) - THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY HAS
SELECTED MICHIGAN'S SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE AS A LOCATION
FOR A NEW AIR WING.
THE MACOMB COUNTY FACILITY IS ABOUT 30 MILES NORTHEAST OF
DETROIT AND WILL PROVIDE SECURITY ALONG THE U.S.-CANADIAN BORDER.
THE AIR WING IS EXPECTED TO HELP LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PROVIDE
SURVEILLANCE IN THE GREAT LAKES REGION. THE DECISION NOW AWAITS
APPROVAL FROM THE AIR FORCE.
MICHIGAN LAWMAKERS HAD SOUGHT THE AIR WING BECAUSE OF THE BASE'S
PROXIMITY TO THREE OF THE NATION'S BUSIEST BORDER CROSSINGS AND
BECAUSE IT CAN BE ACCESSED BY AIR, WATER, RAIL AND INTERSTATE
HIGHWAY.
ABOUT 100 PEOPLE WILL BE ASSIGNED TO THE MICHIGAN WING WHICH IS
EXPECTED TO BE DEDICATED BY NEXT SUMMER.
