Cloned Presidential Trees
(2007-09-28)
(wgvu) - A Michigan organization that works to preserve
great American trees by cloning them has replicated some
presidential timber.
The Champion Tree Project has cloned about 100 trees since its
founding in 1996.
They include some of the nation's oldest and largest trees.
The Copemish (Mich.) organization also is interested in trees
with ties to history.
Champion works with a Connecticut group to preserve the legacy
of old-growth trees from presidential properties.
National Garden Clubs will plant one of their trees Friday at
its St. Louis headquarters.
The beech tree was cloned from one at President Teddy
Roosevelt's home on Long Island.
It will join an ash tree replicated from George Washington's
Mount Vernon estate.
