Budget Update-9-28am
(wgvu) - Lawmakers and Governor Granholm worked
into the early morning hours toward a budget deal that would avoid
a partial state government shutdown.
Both the Republican-led Senate and Democrat-led House broke
about 1 a.m. but are expected to reconvene at 1 p.m.
Negotiators may be getting closer to a deal to cover a $1.75
billion shortfall in the next budget year through tax increases and
spending cuts.
Senate Appropriations Chairman Ron Jelinek says he thinks a deal
can be reached by Sunday.
Granholm has resisted extending the current budget into the
fiscal year that starts Monday. She says she would agree to do that
only if there's agreement on how to increase revenues.
