Manhole Cover Blows Second Day in Row
(wgvu) - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - For the second day in a row, an
underground electrical fire in downtown Grand Rapids has blasted a
manhole cover into the air and damaged a vehicle.
No injuries have been reported.
The first time it happened was Tuesday afternoon when a
72,000-volt power line went haywire below a street.
The hot air generated by the fire created pressure in the
manhole that sent the cover flying.
It happened again yesterday afternoon a few blocks away when a
manhole cover shot straight up into the underside of a pickup truck
passing over it.
The ensuing power outages resulted in classes being canceled
both evenings at the main campus of Grand Rapids Community College.
