European Union Moving Towards Fuel Efficiency USA (wgvu) - BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Commission says public
procurement contracts could encourage car buyers to choose clean
and energy efficient vehicles.
It says buyers should demand that car salesmen explain how much
the vehicle's energy consumption, carbon dioxide and pollutant
emissions will ultimately cost.
An executive report says that would give a competitive advantage
to the cleanest and most energy efficient vehicles.
The EU is expected to come out with binding rules early next
year forcing automakers to cut CO2 emissions from new cars in 2012.
Regulators say they need to act to fight global warming,
acknowledging the move would likely lead to higher car prices as
they try to force Europeans to adopt greener modes of transport.
