Auto Talks
(2007-09-21)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - Negotiators are back at the bargaining table
after meeting late into the night.
General Motors and the United Auto Workers continue to discuss
the automaker's proposal to pay the union to take on retiree health
expenses.
The union has rejected GM's latest offer to fund a trust called
a Voluntary Employees Beneficiary Association, or VEBA (VEE'-buh).
Negotiators have wrapped up work on all noneconomic issues.
They're trying to hammer out the health care piece because the rest
of the contract is contingent upon it.
GM's contract with the UAW has expired, but the union has
extended it hour by hour.
