House Plans To Vote on Budget Tonight
(2007-09-20)
(wgvu) - LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The state House was expected to vote on
proposals to raise the income tax and possibly put a sales tax on
some services tonight.
House Speaker Andy Dillon said the chamber also will vote on
spending cuts to try and erase a more than 1.7 billion dollar
deficit in the fiscal year that begins October 1st.
The Legislature and Governor Granholm are racing the clock to
avoid a possible government shutdown. But they are running out of
time.
Democrats and Republicans so far have disagreed on how high
taxes should be raised. They also have differed on how much money
should be cut out of state government.
The state Senate has finished its business for Thursday and will
be back in session Friday morning.
