Ocean and Great Lakes Ecosyrtem Conservation Council
calls a "holistic" approach to protecting the health of the Great
Lakes.
Government officials and people dependent on the Atlantic and
Great Lakes -- including farmers, fishermen and seafood chefs --
have formed the Ocean and Great Lakes Ecosystem Conservation
Council.
The council is pushing "ecosystem-based management," a new
approach to environmental regulation. Separate entities concerned
with air, water, ground, agriculture, transportation and business
regulation would be coordinated to avoid sometimes competing or
opposing goals.
The panel will also identify ways to work with neighboring
coastal and Great Lakes states and the federal government.
