Budget Update
(2007-09-20)
(wgvu) - Lawmakers are still negotiating over
proposals to raise the state's income tax as an October 1st
deadline to resolve a government budget crisis drew nearer.
The Republican-controlled Senate adjourned Wednesday without
taking any major budget-related votes. Senators come back into
session Thursday and will meet Sunday if necessary.
The Democrat-led House was in session but not voting Wednesday
evening.
Lawmakers appear to be making some progress toward balancing the
state budget and avoiding a partial government shutdown.
But they're still fighting over how much of the projected 1.75
billion dollar deficit for the next fiscal year should be resolved
through higher taxes, and how much should be erased through
spending cuts.
Momentum seemed to be building for enacting a temporary budget
to give lawmakers more time to resolve major differences of
opinion.
