Hotel tax impact
(2007-09-19)
(wgvu) - THE NEW J-W MARRIOTT HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN GRAND RAPIDS IS BANKING ON CONVENTION BUSINESS TO FILL ITS MORE THAN 300 ROOMS.

AND THE COUNTY COULD ALSO USE THE BUSINESS .

THIS YEAR ..KENT COUNTY CRAFTED ITS BUDGET WITH A PROJECTION THAT HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATES WOULD INCREASE BY 7.1 PERCENT OVER FISCAL YEAR 2006.

THAT'S IMPORTANT .BECAUSE REVENUES FROM THE HOTEL TAX HELP THE COUNTY PAY ITS MORE THAN 900 THOUSAND DOLLAR CONTRIBUTION TO THE CONVENTION AND VISTORS BUREAU.

THE BUREAU USES SOME OF THAT MONEY FOR MARKETING ..BECAUSE OFFICIALS SAY CONVENTION AND TOURISM ACCOUNTS FOR ABOUT 50 PERCENT OF HOTEL BUSINESS. AND THAT BUSINESS IS SORELY NEEDED WITH RELATIVELY HIGH HOTEL VACANCY RATES.

THE MONEY IS ALSO USED TO HELP WITH THE COUNTY'S MORE THAN 400 THOUSAND DOLLAR SUBSIDY TO THE JOHN BALL ZOO.

AND THE GRAND DADDY PAYMENT OF THEM ALL .RETIRING SOME 90 MILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT FROM DEVOS PLACE CONVENTION CENTER BONDS.
