Budget Update
(2007-09-19)
(wgvu) - State lawmakers have called it a night.
But before closing up shop, the House did pass bills the Senate
can use to push through a possible tax increase.
The House has been unable over the past five days to muster the
56 votes needed to raise the income tax from 3.9 percent to 4.6
percent. They did pass "vehicle bills" the Senate can use on its
own tax increase proposal as early as Sunday.
Senate Republicans say they were offering to vote on a plan that
would include more than one billion dollars in cuts, while raising
about 660 million dollars by increasing the state's income tax to
4.3 percent.
But Senate Democrats and Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm say
the plan didn't address the state's long-term budget woes and cut
too deeply into state services.
