Blackwater Under Investigation
(2007-09-18)
(wgvu) - A U.S. security firm launched by Holland,
Michigan, native Erik Prince is being linked to a deadly weekend
firefight in Iraq.
An Interior Ministry spokesman says eight civilians were killed
and 13 wounded in a western Baghdad neighborhood. The Iraqi
government says it will revoke Blackwater USA's license.
The company says it acted appropriately "in response to a
hostile attack" by armed insurgents.
U.S. State Department officials say Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice plans to call Iraq's prime minister to express
regret and assure him that the U.S. has launched an investigation.
Blackwater USA was started a decade ago. It has at least 800
million dollars in government contracts in Iraq, including a
contract with the U.S. State Department.
