SURFER SAVES DOG
(2007-09-13)
(wgvu) - A GRAND HAVEN SURFER USED HIS BOARD TO
RESCUE A STRUGGLING DOG THAT A BIG WAVE SWEPT OFF A PIER IN THAT
LAKE MICHIGAN CITY.
TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD MATT SMOLENSKI SAYS HE GRABBED THE POOCH'S
COLLAR JUST AS THE EXHAUSTED ANIMAL STOPPED DOG-PADDLING YESTERDAY
AFTERNOON.
THE DOG WASN'T ON A LEASH WHEN IT WAS WASHED INTO THE LAKE WHILE
WALKING ON THE PIER WITH ITS OWNER, WHO WAS KNOCKED DOWN BY THE
WAVE.
SMOLENSKI RODE A WAVE ON HIS STOMACH TO REACH THE DOG, THEN PUT
IT ON HIS BOARD.
THE ANIMAL RODE THE SURFBOARD TO SHORE WITH SOME HELP FROM
SMOLENSKI AND HIS 24-YEAR-OLD SURFING BUDDY, JOE RIOPELLE OF GRAND
HAVEN.
THE GRATEFUL OWNER THANKED SMOLENSKI AND GAVE HIM A HIGH FIVE.
