(wgvu) - A CONSULTANT'S REPORT SHOWS THE FLAGPOLE
THAT BROKE IN HIGH WINDS AND KILLED AN OAKLAND COUNTY KINDERGARTNER
IN APRIL WAS RUSTED INSIDE AND OUT.
THE REPORT FROM A CONSULTING FIRM HIRED BY THE FERNDALE SCHOOL
DISTRICT TO EXAMINE THE ACCIDENT AT ROOSEVELT PRIMARY SCHOOL WAS
FILED IN MAY. THE DETROIT FREE PRESS REPORTED ITS FINDINGS TODAY.
FIVE-YEAR-OLD ANGEL POCOCK-SMITH OF OAK PARK WAS PLAYING IN THE
COURTYARD WHEN THE STEEL POLE FELL.
A DETROIT-AREA ATTORNEY RETAINED BY THE GIRL'S FAMILY SAYS THE
POLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER MAINTAINED. HE SAYS HE TOLD OFFICIALS
HE PLANS TO FILE A CIVIL LAWSUIT.
A SCHOOL SPOKESWOMAN DECLINED TO COMMENT, SAYING ONLY THE
DISTRICT HAS NO RECORDS OF THE INSTALLATION OR INSPECTION OF THE
POLE.
