BOTTLE BILL
(2007-09-07)
(wgvu) - HOUSE DEMOCRATS HAVE INTRODUCED BILLS
AIMED AT STOPPING PEOPLE FROM COLLECTING MICHIGAN'S 10-CENT BOTTLE
DEPOSIT WHEN THEY SHOULDN'T.
MICHIGAN TAXPAYERS AND BUSINESSES MAY LOSE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS
EACH YEAR WHEN BOTTLES ARE BROUGHT IN FROM OHIO, INDIANA AND OTHER
STATES THAT DON'T HAVE SIMILAR BOTTLE RETURN LAWS.
THERE WOULD BE PENALTIES ATTACHED TO ILLEGAL BOTTLE DEPOSIT
CLAIMS.
BUSINESSES WOULD HAVE TO UPGRADE THEIR BOTTLE RETURN EQUIPMENT.
BUT SUPPORTERS SAY IT WOULD BE WORTH THE COST.
SPONSORS SAY THE LEGISLATION HAS SOME BIPARTISAN SUPPORT.
