Former Detroit chief: Ex-cop now suing city denied internal probe
(2007-09-06)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit police Chief Jerry Oliver was on
the stand today as the whistleblower civil trial winds down.
Oliver testified that he wasn't initially told of an
investigation into a rumored wild party at Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's
official residence.
He says he received a memo the day after Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
removed Gary Brown as head of internal affairs that confirmed a
probe.
Brown is one of two former officers suing the city and
Kilpatrick after saying they suffered for blowing the whistle on
alleged misdeeds within Kilpatrick's security unit.
Oliver picked Brown to lead internal affairs and he was unhappy
with the decision to dismiss him. But Oliver says the police
department had no business investigating the mayor.
