Feds, local Muslims discuss donations and links to terrorism
(wgvu) - DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Federal officials are urging Muslims to
be careful when choosing charities for donations.
They met this week with local Muslim leaders in Dearborn in
advance of Ramadan.
Islam's holy month of fasting begins at dusk a week from today,
and is a peak time for donations.
Some area Muslims fear that by giving to certain charities, they
may be linked to terrorist groups those groups support. Muslim
leaders say most donors simply want their money to go for food and
U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy says a person with "innocent
intent" -- giving to a charity not officially designated a
terrorist organization -- will not get in trouble.
