WIND-BLOWN FLARE-UPS IN THE 28-SQUARE-MILE SLEEPER LAKE WILDFIRE IN
REMOTE UPPER PENINSULA STATE FOREST LAND.
A LIGHTNING STRIKE AUG. 2 IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED THE FIRE
IN A SWAMPY AREA OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST IN LUCE COUNTY.
THE 18,185-ACRE FIRE IS BETWEEN NEWBERRY AND PINE STUMP
JUNCTION, ABOUT 55 MILES WEST OF SAULT STE. MARIE AND 300 MILES
NORTH OF DETROIT.
DROUGHT AND 80-DEGREE HEAT MADE CONDITIONS WORSE.
THE STATE SAYS THE COST OF BATTLING THE FIRE HAS REACHED $5
MILLION.
THE SLEEPER LAKE FIRE IS ONE OF EIGHT ACTIVE FOREST FIRES IN THE
UPPER PENINSULA.
