BP REFINERY-PERMIT

(wgvu) - BP SAYS IT WILL NOT INCREASE THE AMOUNT
OF POLLUTION IT DUMPS INTO LAKE MICHIGAN FROM ITS WHITING REFINERY.
INSTEAD, THE COMPANY SAYS IT WILL SEEK TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS
TO MOVE AHEAD WITH PLANS TO EXPAND THE REFINERY WITHOUT INCREASING
THE AMOUNT OF AMMONIA AND SUSPENDED SOLIDS IT DUMPS INTO THE GREAT
LAKES.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT FOLLOWS WEEKS OF UPROAR BY ENVIRONMENTALISTS
AND LAWMAKERS UPSET THAT INDIANA APPROVED A PERMIT ALLOWING THE
INCREASED DISCHARGES.
BP AMERICA CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT BOB MALONE SAID THE COMPANY
WILL NOT USE THE PERMITTED HIGHER DISCHARGE LIMITS AS IT MOVES TO
PROCESS HEAVY CANADIAN CRUDE OIL.
