Coast Guard Exercises
of live ammunition during drills on Lake Erie.
The lasers simulate firing of real bullets and are similar to a
video game. Boats were equipped with sensors to detect whether they
had been hit.
A spokesman says the exercise is an alternative training method.
Today's demonstration took place three to five miles from
Cleveland.
The Coast Guard had dropped a proposal last year to create 34
live ammunition training zones on the Great Lakes.
Anglers had complained about safety while environmental
activists said bullets could harm wildlife by dumping seven
thousand pounds of lead per year into the lakes.
