Unemployment Rates
increased in 14 of Michigan's 17 regional labor markets in July.
The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth said today
that jobless rates in the Upper Peninsula declined slightly, while
the rates in northeast and northwest Lower Michigan were unchanged.
The monthly survey of employers indicated that July seasonally
unadjusted payroll jobs in Michigan were affected by temporary
plant shutdowns and supplier layoffs tied to the auto industry.
Plants typically retool in July for the new model year.
The largest month-to-month jumps in unemployment occurred in the
metropolitan areas including and surrounding the cities of Monroe,
Flint, Lansing and Saginaw.
Michigan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate in July was 7.2
percent, highest in the country.
