FOREST FIRES-MICHIGAN
(2007-08-21)
(wgvu) - - STRONG WINDS HAVE AWAKENED THE SLEEPER LAKE WILDFIRE IN THE UPPER PENINSULA, FORCING ABOUT TWO DOZEN RESIDENTS OUT OF THEIR HOMES IN THE DEER CREEK AND HALFWAY LAKE AREAS.
THE THREE SPOT FIRES HAVE ALSO FORCED THE CLOSURE OF A 15-MILE STRETCH OF COUNTY ROAD 407, BEWEEN PINE STUMP JUNCTION AND STATE HIGHWAY 123.
THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES SAYS THE FIRE IS ABOUT TWO THIRDS CONTAINED. SO FAR, IT'S BURNED AN AREA OF NEARLY 30 SQUARE MILES.
OFFICIALS BELIEVE A LIGHTNING STRIKE IN THE LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST IN LUCE COUNTY HAD STARTED THE WILDFIRE AUG. 2.
