(wgvu) - MICHIGAN'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HELD STEADY FROM JUNE TO JULY AT 7.2 PERCENT.
THE RATE WAS SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN THE JULY 2006 RATE OF 6.9
PERCENT. THE NATIONAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE LAST MONTH WAS 4.6 PERCENT.
IN JUNE, MICHIGAN HAD THE HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AMONG THE 50
STATES.
THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND ECONOMIC GROWTH SAYS THE
STATE'S WORK FORCE FELL FROM JANUARY TO JULY BY 64,000, OR 1.3
PERCENT.
THE STATE'S LABOR FORCE HAD TRENDED UPWARD FROM 2003 TO 2006.
THE PACE OF JOB LOSS IN MICHIGAN THIS YEAR IS SIMILAR TO LAST.
SINCE JULY 2006, THE STATE HAS LOST A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF JOBS
IN MANUFACTURING, CONSTRUCTION, GOVERNMENT AND TRADE,
TRANSPORTATION AND UTILITIES, WHILE ADDING JOBS IN EDUCATION AND
HEALTH SERVICES.
