BP REFINERY-APPEA

(wgvu) - AN ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP IS APPEALING A
PERMIT ALLOWING BP TO RELEASE MORE POLLUTION INTO LAKE MICHIGAN
FROM ITS WHITING OIL REFINERY.
THE ALLIANCE FOR THE GREAT LAKES FILED THE PETITION IN SOUTH
BEND TODAY ASKING THE INDIANA OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ADJUDICATION
TO BLOCK THE REFINERY'S PERMIT. THE PETITION ALSO ASKS THAT
OPPONENTS BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO APPEAL THE PERMIT GRANTED TO THE
REFINERY.
THE ALLIANCE'S WEB SITE SAYS IT HAS OFFICES IN GRAND HAVEN,
MICHIGAN, AND CHICAGO.
IT AND OTHER GROUPS ARE UPSET THE PERMIT ALLOWS BP TO INCREASE
THE AMOUNT OF AMMONIA IT DUMPS INTO THE LAKE BY 54 PERCENT AND THE
AMOUNT OF SUSPENDED SOLIDS BY 35 PERCENT.
THE AGENCY HAS ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING IT FOLLOWED APPROPRIATE
NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES IN THE MATTER.
