MUSKEGON NAVAL MUSEUM
(2007-08-15)
(wgvu) - AN UNUSUAL MOVE FOR THE GRAND BAPIDS-BASED FREY FOUNDATION WILL BENEFIT A MUSKEGON COUNTY CAUSE. THE GREAT LAKES NAVAL MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM WILL BE GETTING A
$100,000 CHALLENGE GRANT FROM THE FOUNDATION.
IT'S UNUSUAL BECAUSE SUCH GIFTS ARE GENERALLY RESTRICTED TO KENT COUNTY PROJECTS. THE MUSEUM IS A NEW 20,000 SQUARE FOOT FACILITY GOING UP ON THE SHORE OF THE MUSKEGON SHIPPING CHANNEL, NEXT TO THE RESTORED WORLD WAR TWO SUBMARINE USS SILVERSIDES.
THE FREY FOUNDATION BECAME INVOLVED BECAUSE THEY WERE DRAWN TO THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT AND THE SINCERITY AND VISION OF ITS ORGANIZERS.
GROUND BREAKING FOR THE MUSEUM WAS LAST WEEKEND, WITH A GRAND OPENING PLANNED FOR NEXT SPRING.
