Forest Fires in UP
NEWBERRY, Mich. (AP) - Crews are preparing today for a flare-up
of a wildfire that has burned through parts of the eastern Upper
Peninsula for a week.
The fire has covered 28 square miles in Luce County, mostly
within the Lake Superior State Forest.
A DNR spokeswoman says winds had stilled last night but the
blaze continues to burn. Warm, dry breezes are forecast tomorrow.
The fire's size has been adjusted from previous estimates to 18
thousand 150 acres.
A 1976 blaze consumed 78 thousand acres about 35 miles southwest
of the current fire. A 1980 fire in the northern lower peninsula
had covered 20 thousand acres and destroyed 44 homes.
Two northern Michigan fires burned more than one million acres
in the late 18 hundreds.
