Former Detective Sentenced for Fraud
(2007-08-06)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - A former homicide detective who admitted to
bilking a family out of more than 12-thousand dollars to pay for
the investigation of their son's murder has been sentenced today to
a year in prison.
Lance Newman spent more than ten years on the Detroit police
force.
He took the money by falsely telling the family of Joseph Wagner
that it was needed to pay for housing an important witness.
U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen also ordered Newman to repay
the money and serve 400 hours of community service.
Wagner was a 21-year-old student at Eastern Michigan University
and a civil rights activist.
He was stabbed to death in a parking lot during a festival at
Holy Redeemer Church in Detroit in June of 2005.
