LEVIN: MOMENTUM BUILDING FOR TROOP WITHDRAWAL

WASHINGTON (AP) - MICHIGAN DEMOCRAT CARL LEVIN SAYS MOMENTUM IS
BUILDING IN THE SENATE TO PUSH PRESIDENT BUSH TO CHANGE THE COURSE
IN IRAQ IN THE FALL.
THE HEAD OF THE SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE SAYS THAT WHILE
PREVIOUS TROOP-WITHDRAWAL EFFORTS HAVE FAILED, PUBLIC UNEASE AND
GOP DISSENT OVER THE WAR COULD SHAPE THE PRESIDENT'S POLICIES.
LEVIN SAYS THE CAUSE WAS HELPED WHEN FOUR REPUBLICANS BROKE
RANKS ON A MEASURE TO ADVANCE A TROOP WITHDRAWAL AND MOVE TOWARD A
MORE LIMITED MISSION IN IRAQ.
LEVIN HAS PRESSED THE WHITE HOUSE AND MILITARY LEADERS TO FORCE
IRAQI POLITICIANS TO DEVELOP POLITICAL COMPROMISES TO HELP THE U.S.
REDUCE ITS MILITARY PRESENCE. MORE THAN THREE-THOUSAND-650 U.S.
TROOPS HAVE DIED IN THE WAR.
