GRAVES EXHUMED
(2007-07-27)
(wgvu) - HUMAN REMAINS -- SOME BURIED FOR MORE
THAN A CENTURY -- WERE BEING REMOVED FROM A GRAND RAPIDS CEMETERY SO WORKERS CAN
REPLACE A COLLAPSED WALL.
GROUNDSKEEPERS WERE IDENTIFYING THE REMAINS THIS WEEK FROM 19
GRAVES AT THE FULTON STREET CEMETERY.
EACH OF THE REMAINS WERE TO BE TAKEN BY HEARSE TO A CEMETERY
STORAGE BUILDING, TO BE RE-INTERRED ONCE THE WALL IS COMPLETED.
NEIGHBORHOOD ACTIVISTS SAY THE (M) MILLION DOLLAR
PROJECT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABANDONED ONCE THE CITY REALIZED IT WOULD
BE MOVING GRAVES TO RESTORE THE 500-FOOT-LONG WALL. THE WALL
COLLAPSED TWO YEARS AGO.
