SAME-SEX BENEFITS
(2007-07-26)
(wgvu) - THE STATE SUPREME COURT THROWS OUT A SUIT AGAINST A "SAME SEX BENEFITS" POLICY IN THE THE ANN ARBOR SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THE COURT IN HANDING DOWN ITS RULING, STOPPED SHORT OF JUDGING THE LEGALITY OF THE DISTRICT'S POLICY, RULING INSTEAD THAT THE PLAINTIFFS LACKED THE LEGAL RIGHT TO BRING THE SUIT.
THE BROADER ISSUE OF SAME-SEX BENEFITS STEMS FROM A 2004 VOTER-APPROVED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT BANNING GAY MARRIAGE.
THE HIGH COURT, IN ITS TERM STARTING IN OCTOBER, WILL CONSIDER WHETHER THE BAN ALSO PROHIBITS UNIVERSITIES AND PUBLIC EMPLOYERS FROM PROVIDING BENEFITS TO THE PARTNERS OF GAY EMPLOYEES.
