Fewer Prison Work Crews
(2007-07-18)
(wgvu) - The state plans to stop sending out some
of the state prison inmate work crews who cut grass, shovel snow
and perform some other work at relatively low cost for local
governments.
It's a cost-cutting move announced by the Michigan Department of
Corrections.
The department plans to idle most, but not all, of the estimated
250 work crews.
It could save about 6 million dollars a year for the state.
But it could hurt local governments that got the cheaper labor
through the prison system.
