Prison Health Care
(2007-07-18)
(wgvu) - Michigan's prison boss says the state will switch
to H-M-O's to provide health care to the state's about 50-thousand
inmates.
Corrections Director Patricia Caruso says the plan calls for up
to six health maintenance organizations to supply care for inmates,
starting in March.
The services now are provided under a statewide managed care
contract.
Caruso says the prison system will pay at least 300 (M) million
dollars in health care costs this year.
Federal courts have been overseeing health care at state prisons
in Jackson after inmates sued over what they said was inadequate
care.
