Surf's Up
(2007-07-13)
(wgvu) - Surf's Up is the latest computer animated feature film about Penguins, and it more than makes up for the travesty of Happy Feet. Surf's Up follows the story of Cody Maverick, a scrawny runt of a penguin, who has a talent for surfing. When he was newly hatched, the world famous surfing champion Big Z visited his arctic home, extolling the virtues of catching a wave. Cody was inspired, and years later he travels to a South Seas paradise for the Big Z Memorial Surf Contest. On his first day there he challenges the bullying champion, Tank. (clip) Cody wipes out, and is taken under the wing of cute lifeguard named Lani, who he instantly falls for. (clip) Lani brings Cody to her Uncle Geek, who is a sort of Zen Master of surfing. For Geek it's all about having fun, whereas Cody is stuck on the concept of winning. (clip) Surf's Up is first animated mockumentary I've seen, and it's played well. The movie is low-key, just like a stereotypical surfer. The story is genuine, not forced like the aforementioned Happy Feet. It's also not bogged down by an endless spew of popular songs. The voice talent is all fine, Jeff Bridges as Geek, Zooey Deschanel as Lanni, Jon Heder as Cody's pal Chicken Joe, and James Woods as the brash promoter Reggie Belafonte. Shia LeBoufe is decent as Cody, a penguin who comes to know the true meaning of being a winner. © Copyright 2021, wgvu
