NAACP CLAIMS MORTGAGE LENDERS DISCRIMATED AGAINST BLACKS
(2007-07-11)
(wgvu) - LOS ANGELES (AP) - The N-double-A-C-P has sued a dozen mortgage
lenders, saying they discriminated against blacks by steering them
into higher-interest, subprime loans.
The civil rights group filed the suit in Los Angeles federal
court and seeks class action status.
The suit asks the court to order the lenders to treat blacks
fairly and comply with fair housing and credit laws.
The suit comes as the N-double-A-C-P holds its 98th annual
convention in Detroit.
Among the defendants named in the suit are Ameriquest Mortgage,
Citigroup.
Both companies say that their lending practices are fair.
