LAWMAKERS WON'T RETURN FROM BREAK
(2007-07-09)
(wgvu) - LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Lawmakers won't return to the Michigan
Capitol this week after all.
Legislative leaders had planned to cut short a scheduled
two-week break that began last week after Governor Granholm
criticized them for taking a vacation without passing the state
budget.
But today, both the House and Senate canceled sessions that were
to begin tomorrow and plan to reconvene next week instead.
Spokesmen for legislative leaders say lawmakers will be working
in their districts and add that leaders will be in Lansing off and
on this week.
A Granholm spokesman is critical of the move and says lawmakers
need to get back to work.
There is a projected one-point-six (b) billion deficit in the
budget that starts in October.
