(wgvu) - FORMAL CHARGES COULD BE FILED TODAY AGAINST A MAN SUSPECTED OF KILLING A GRAND RAPIDS POLICE OFFICER.
29-YEAR-OLD ROBERT KOZMINSKI WAS RESPONDING TO A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CALL ON THE CITY'S NORTHEAST SIDE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.
AS HE MOVED THROUGH THE REAR OF THE HOME, HE WAS HIT IN THE HEAD BY A SINGLE SHOTGUN BLAST FIRED THROUGH A GLASS DOOR. HE DIED A SHORT TIME LATER AT SPECTRUM BUTTERWORTH HOSPITAL.
POLICE ARRESTED 47-YEAR-OLD JEFFREY VAN VELS HE'S IN THE KENT COUNTY JAIL ON A PRELIMINARY OPEN COUNT OF MURDER, PENDING A DECISION BY THE PROSECUTOR ON MORE DEFINITE CHARGE.
OFFICER KOZMINSKI IS SURVIVED BY HIS PARENTS AND A THREE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER. VISITATION IS WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AT ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA, WITH FUNERAL FRIDAY THE 13th AT HOLY CROSS CEMETERY.
KOZMINSKI IS THE FIRST GRAND RAPIDS OFFICER TO DIE IN THE LINE OF DUTY SINCE JOSEPH TAYLOR IN NOVEMBER OF 19-86, KILLED DURING A MURDER INVESTIGATION.
