QUADRUPLE FINES FOR CITIES THAT RELEASE SEWAGE INTO THE GREAT
LAKES.
THE LEGISLATION BY REPUBLICAN MARK KIRK AND DEMOCRAT DAN
LIPINSKI ALSO WOULD FINANCE WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND WETLAND
RESTORATION.
IT WOULD BOOST TOP FINES FOR VIOLATING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
AGENCY RULES FROM 25-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS PER
DAY, STARTING IN 20-27.
KIRK SAYS 24 (B) BILLION GALLONS OF SEWER OVERFLOW WATER IS
RELEASED EACH YEAR INTO THE GREAT LAKES, WITH DETROIT ALONE
RELEASING 13 (B) BILLION GALLONS.
A CITY SPOKESMAN SAYS DETROIT FOLLOWS FEDERAL RULES WHEN IT
DUMPS SEWAGE INTO THE DETROIT RIVER.
