Education Department report: Eastern Michigan violated Clery Act
Eastern Michigan University violated federal law by mishandling
information related to the death of a student last December.
The 18-page report released today by the university says E-M-U
failed to notify the campus community in a timely manner that the
death of 22-year-old student Laura Dickinson was a homicide.
The probe also determined that the university was not prepared
to handle such situations, did not have appropriate policies in
place and violated federal requirements for keeping and disclosing
crime statistics.
Dickinson's family and E-M-U students did not learn she had been
raped and killed until February when a suspect was arrested.
Many in the university's administration have been accused of
covering up the truth and endangering students to protect the
school's image.
