(wgvu) - FILMING STARTS THIS SUMMER IN TORONTO ON A MOVIE
BASED ON THE LIFE OF THE INVENTOR OF INTERMITTENT WINDSHIELD
WIPERS.
THE FILM, CALLED "FLASH OF GENIUS," WILL STAR GREG KINNEAR AS
WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR ROBERT KEARNS.
SPYGLASS ENTERTAINMENT DESCRIBES THE MOVIE AS A "REAL-LIFE
DAVID AND GOLIATH STORY."
KEARNS PATENTED THE WIPERS IN 1967. HE DEMONSTRATED THE SYSTEM
TO FORD, WHICH INTRODUCED CARS WITH INTERMITTENT WIPERS IN 1978.
OTHER AUTOMAKERS SOON FOLLOWED.
KEARNS FILED A PATENT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUIT AGAINST FORD AND
COLLECTED $10 M) MILLION DOLLARS IN 1990. THE U-S SUPREME COURT IN
1995 LET KEARNS COLLECT AROUND 21 (M) MILLION FROM CHRYSLER FOR
USING HIS DESIGN.
