Common School Calender
(2007-06-27)
(wgvu) - All schools within an intermediate school
district would have to operate on the same calendar starting in the
2008-09 school year under legislation approved in the Michigan
Senate.
Intermediate school districts often include all of the school
districts in a county.
The bill would require all schools in an I-S-D to have the same
winter break, spring break and professional development days.
Schools operating on year-round or trimester programs would be
exempt from the common calendar.
Republicans say the bill could save money by allowing for more
sharing of buses, food services, curricula and other resources.
Democrats, however, complain the measure would NOT apply to
charter schools and could strip school employees of a tool used in
collective bargaining.
