THE REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED STATE SENATE HAS
VOTED MOSTLY ALONG PARTY LINES TO REQUIRE NEW SCHOOL EMPLOYEES TO
WORK LONGER TO GET FULL HEALTH CARE BENEFITS IN RETIREMENT.
ANOTHER BILL WOULD REQUIRE NEW SCHOOL WORKERS TO CONTRIBUTE MORE
OF THEIR PAY TO THE PENSION SYSTEM.
THE BILLS NOW HEAD TO THE DEMOCRATIC-LED HOUSE.
REPUBLICANS SAY THEY WANT CHANGES TO PUBLIC EMPLOYEES BENEFITS
IF THEY ARE TO ALLOW A VOTE ON A TAX INCREASE TO BALANCE NEXT
YEAR'S STATE BUDGET.
THE TAX HIKE LEGISLATION HAS YET TO BE APPROVED BY HOUSE
DEMOCRATS.
