HEALTHBEAT-HEARTS AND KIDNEYS
(2007-06-26)
(wgvu) - A MICHIGAN MEDICAL EXPERT SAYS THAT
THERE'S A SURPRISING LINK BETWEEN DISEASES OF THE KIDNEY AND OF THE
HEART.
THAT'S THE CONCLUSION FROM TWO STUDIES INVOLVING ABOUT
50-THOUSAND PATIENTS.
IT PROMISES TO BOOST EFFORTS TO DIAGNOSE KIDNEY DISEASE EARLIER,
WHICH CAN BE DONE WITH A SIMPLE, LOW-COST TEST.
DOCTOR PETER MCCULLOUGH IS CHIEF OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE CHIEF AT
BEAUMONT HOSPITAL IN ROYAL OAK.
HE SAYS PEOPLE MAY KNOW THEIR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS, BUT THEY DON'T
KNOW HOW WELL THEIR KIDNEYS ARE FUNCTIONING.
CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE AFFECTS ABOUT 19 (M) MILLION AMERICANS,
AND MANY DON'T KNOW THEY HAVE IT.
HEART DISEASE CLAIMS THE LIVES OF MANY PEOPLE WITH KIDNEY
DISEASE.
